Spotify has launched a paid membership feature for podcasters, giving creators a new way to generate revenue directly from their audiences on the platform. The program lets podcasters offer a range of perks to paying subscribers beyond simple bonus content.
What the memberships include
According to TechCrunch, the perks available through Spotify's new memberships include ad-free listening, early access to episodes, and exclusive bonus content. The offering is designed to deepen the relationship between podcasters and their most loyal fans.
Revenue split favors creators
Spotify will allow podcasters to keep 90% of the revenue generated through memberships, according to TechCrunch. That split is intended to make the program attractive to creators who might otherwise use third-party platforms to fund their work.
Competing with Patreon
The launch puts Spotify in more direct competition with Patreon, which has long been a go-to platform for podcasters seeking listener support. As noted by Engadget, Spotify's memberships program is being positioned explicitly as an alternative to Patreon's model, keeping the financial relationship between creators and fans inside Spotify's own ecosystem.
Other outlets, including 9to5Google, noted that the feature gives listeners a way to support their preferred shows and receive added perks in return, framing the product as a benefit to both sides of the creator-listener relationship.
