AMD has announced an expansion of its FSR 4.1 upscaling technology to a wider set of hardware, moving beyond the Radeon 7000 and 9000 series graphics cards where it was previously exclusive. According to The Verge and IGN, FSR 4.1 was until now unavailable on older or console-based platforms, making today's announcement a notable broadening of the technology's reach.

Supported Devices

According to multiple reports, FSR 4.1 support is rolling out to the following platforms:

  • Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles
  • Radeon RX 6000-series discrete GPUs
  • Ryzen AI Max 300 and 400 series devices
  • Ryzen AI 9 300 and 400 series devices
  • Handheld devices including the Xbox Ally X and Z2 Extreme and Z2A-based handhelds
  • Laptops featuring the above Ryzen AI processors

Context and Competition

As noted by IGN, FSR 4.1 has represented a significant step forward for AMD's AI upscaling capabilities. The technology's arrival on Xbox Series X/S puts it in competition with Sony's own upscaling solution on PlayStation 5, which IGN identified as QSSR.

According to Tom's Hardware, as reported via Digital Foundry's aggregated coverage, the expanded release brings the technology to older hardware but comes with a small performance cost. AMD's framing positions FSR 4.1 as cutting-edge tech now accessible to a much larger installed base.

Availability

The Verge reports that FSR 4.1 support for Radeon RX 6000-series GPUs and the listed Ryzen AI devices began rolling out on the day of the announcement. Game developers will need to integrate the updated SDK for titles to take advantage of the feature on these newly supported platforms.
